As you prepare a nursery for a baby's arrival, consider changes you may make to the windows in the room. The standard windows may work fine, but you will find many benefits from an upgrade or the installation of new windows for the nursery.

Upgrades to windows may include benefits for the infant years and a long time into the future as the baby transitions into a toddler.

1. Tinted Windows

When a child is under the age of six months, many professionals, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommend no direct sunlight. A nursery may have large windows with a lot of natural light. While natural light helps save energy and provides benefits in the future, install tinted windows to limit natural light for the early years.

Unlike curtains or blinds, tinted windows still provides a visual of the outside world while blocking out harmful UV rays and bright sunlight. As you care for the child, you will still enjoy a view of the outside world. As a child's vision develops, the outside view will help with the recognition of colors, shapes, and objects.

Along with protection for the child's skin, tinted windows provide a darker environment ideal for naps and sleeping. As a newborn builds a sleep routine, the windows will help with around-the-clock naps and sleep schedules.

2. Double Pane Windows

Along with skin protection, a nursery should have a comfortable room temperature for a newborn baby. The ideal temperature for a nursery ranges anywhere from 65 to 72 degrees. Double-pane windows help regulate temperature. In the summer, hot temperatures are kept out, and in the winter, cold temperatures are kept out.

The double panes also help regulate the temperatures you set inside. You will not have to run air conditioners or heaters for longer than necessary. Double-pane windows are sold in all sizes and will often fit into the current window frame you have in the room.

3. Awning Windows

As a baby learns to walk and explores the nursery, you want to consider the window safety in the room. Dangers may be present when children access open windows or screens.

If you want windows your child cannot access, consider awning windows. The windows are typically installed on the high part of the wall, close to the ceiling.

Awning windows open inward toward the room and do not offer an accessible windowsill for the child. The opening allows you to fill the room with fresh air while preventing a child from getting too close.

To expand the natural light options in the room, consider multiple awning windows around the walls or use the sunniest wall for multiple windows.

4. Between-the-Glass Blinds

Hanging blind cords are another safety concern in a nursery. Blind strings present a choking hazard and a potential danger if a child pulls them too hard. Provide a nursery with blinds and increase safety with between-the-glass blinds. This specialty window includes built-in blinds set between two panes of glass.

The blinds open and shut with a lever on the side of a window. Some of the more advanced glass blinds may include a remote control, which is beneficial if you are holding or rocking the baby and do not have easy access to the window. The blinds also add another layer of insulation, similar to the double-pane window.

As you shop for windows, you may mix and match options. For example, tinted windows may have built-in blinds as well.
